The Most Popular Baby Names | Scary Mommy

The most popular baby names right now are Sophia, Mason and Ava the most popular baby names. Vowels, sounds and name length have a lot to do with how we pick our baby names. In this episode, the Name Dame talks to Laura Wattenberg, author of the Baby Name Wizard to figure out what makes these baby names so popular. Sophia, a name of Greek origin, means wisdom or wise. We all know a Sophia even if it’s just from watching The Golden Girls. Who didn’t love that Sophia? The success of Sophia is not because it’s biblical or had a place in pop culture. The popularity of the name Sophia has sustained and not just in America, but across the world. Laura Wattenberg, founder of BabyNameWizard.com explains that the long vowel sound like the ‘a’ at the of Sophia is very appealing to parents when picking a girl’s name. And then there’s Ava. Ava has its advantages. First, it reminds us of old Hollywood - Ava Gardner - ahhhh. Second, it’s easy to spell! The ‘a’ and ‘v’ sounds plus the shortness of the name Ava is what parents like about it. So A+ for Ava! When it comes to boys, parents always love a name that ends in an ‘n’ sound, according to Wattenberg. That might explain why the name Mason broke the charts in 2007 and stayed there. Pop culture may have had something to do with it when a Kardashian named her son Mason, but it kept rising after that. Whether it’s because a mason was a trade or it’s just got the right sound, we keep loving the name, Mason. Whether you meet a handful of Sophias, Avas and Masons wherever you go, if you love the name, use it for your baby. It’s not going out of style any time soon. Why Hard-to-Pronounce Names are Easy To Remember | The Name Dame | Scary Mommy

Unique baby names might be hard to pronounce but that makes them meaningful baby names. When it comes to baby names for boys and girls, we’re going back to tradition and culture! The Name Dame finds out why the trend is turning with Pamela Redmond Satran, co-creator of nameberry.com. The baby name trend is clear. Parents are returning to their roots. A lot of parents are looking to their cultural heritage when naming their babies. Ten to fifteen years ago, they may not have been comfortable doing that. “We’re not the melting pot we used to be where we wanted to look as American and as similar as possible. In the 1960s, we started to celebrate our cultural heritage,” says Pamela Redmond Satran, co-creator of nameberry.com. Parents aren’t just returning to their own heritage. They’re looking to different cultures when naming their babies. Look at the Beckhams -- Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo. That’s not British! And how many Sole’s have you run into that are actually Italian? I thought so. If you need help picking the perfect cultural name for your baby, consider hiring someone. For example, Sancta Nomina will do the research for you if you want the perfect Catholic name for your baby and they’ll do it for only $50. What a blessing! When the Name Dame hit the streets, she got some good tips when it comes to naming your baby all while keeping your culture in mind. To start feel free to get creative, but make sure to think about whether the baby name can be pronounced, if it has meaning and of course, make sure it sounds cool! According to Satran, names that are harder to pronounce and spell, are going to have to be explained over and over again, but the upside is they’ll never forget it. The best advice we got? Don't be afraid to pass along your cultural identity. People having trouble with it will figure it out. So go ahead and make a name for yourself! Weird Baby Names Are Becoming The New Normal | The Name Dame | Scary Mommy

Unusual baby names may not be so unusual anymore. Sometimes an unusual baby name just gets a different spelling or a tweak here and a tweak there, but either way, we’re getting more and more unique with our baby names. The Name Dame chats with Busy Phillips about picking the perfect name for your baby and pops into the one place that needs to be on its name game -- the coffee shop. From Merlin to Willow to Lorde, Winter, Queen and Quinnifer, weird is becoming the new normal when it comes to baby names, which is often the case with celebrity baby names. Actress, Busy Phillips, took time when naming her babies. There were no baby naming books or baby name generators for Busy. When her girls, Birdie and Cricket, were born, she observed them and that’s when their names came to her. If it isn’t an unusual name, baby names of today might be spelled in a unique way. Say goodbye to Erica and hello to Airwrecka. That’s more than a name. That’s a statement! Olivia will always be a popular name, but gaining some traction is Alivia. Easier to place in the alphabet! But what does all this mean when you hit up a Starbucks? Will the barista be able to spell Bexley or Jotham or Brecken correctly? It’s unclear. According to Jack, a New York City barista, he gets all kinds of difficult names he might not spell correctly or pronounce properly. His advice to those with unusual names? “Just go with the flow. Pay more attention to how the coffee tastes than how I spell your name.” So whether your baby’s name is Starlight, Emperor, Wellington or Chosen, it’s your baby and name her what you want to.
